Motor not working · Brisbane northside
Garage door motor not working? Start with what it’s doing — or not doing.
Silence, a hum, a click, or a motor that runs while the door stays put each point somewhere different. Two of those are safe to check yourself. One of them means stop.
- Silent, humming, clicking or running
- Power and remote checks
- Door checked before the motor is blamed

Symptom by symptom
What the opener is telling you.
- 01
Completely dead — no light
Power. A tripped safety switch, an unplugged unit, or a failed transformer or board.
- 02
Light on, nothing happens
Remote or wall button not reaching the unit, a lock-out engaged, or a board fault.
- 03
Hums but doesn’t move
Usually the door is too heavy — a broken spring — or the drive gear has stripped. Stop pressing.
- 04
Clicks, then nothing
A relay on the board engaging but the motor not starting. Often a capacitor or board.
- 05
Runs, door stays put
The carriage has disengaged (the release cord was pulled), the gear has stripped, or the belt or chain has broken.
- 06
Works intermittently
Loose wiring, a failing board, or a remote on its last legs.
Before you call
Safe to check before you call.
- 01
Power
Is the opener plugged in and its light on? Has a safety switch tripped? Try the wall button as well as the remote.
- 02
The release cord
If someone pulled the red cord, the carriage is disengaged and the motor runs without the door. On most units, running the opener to the end of travel re-engages it — or call and we’ll talk you through it.
- 03
The door by hand
With the opener disengaged, lift the door. Normal weight: opener fault. Very heavy: spring — stop.

Humming means stop
A motor humming without moving the door is straining against something it can’t lift, usually a broken spring. Every extra press risks the motor and gears. Leave it and call.
0408 190 595How we fix it
Most “dead motors” aren’t.

Simple first
power, remote, release cord, spring
Repairable
boards, gears, capacitors where parts exist
Both
prices when replacement is a real option
A large share of “motor not working” calls are a power issue, a remote, a release cord, or a door with a broken spring that a healthy motor can’t lift. We check the door and the simple things first — because replacing a motor that was never the problem is expensive and pointless.
When it is the motor.
Capacitors, boards, gears, drives and transformers are all replaceable on units where parts are still available. Where they aren’t, or where the repair would cost close to a new opener, you’ll get both prices and an honest recommendation.
Merlin, Gliderol, B&D, ATA and others.
We work on most common residential openers, older and newer, and know their habits. Independent — not a dealer.

How it works
Straightforward from the first call.
- 01
Tell us what it’s doing
Call or send an enquiry. We'll ask how old the door is, what happened before the fault, and whether anything's been tried.
- 02
We inspect it properly
The whole door system — not just the part that looks broken. Developing wear gets pointed out, not hidden.
- 03
You get the price first
What's wrong, what needs doing now, what can wait. Then the price. No pressure to proceed.
- 04
Fixed, often on the spot
If parts are on the van, the repair is usually done the same visit. If not, we return promptly — generally within a couple of days.
