Garage door won't close, or reverses back up?

A door that won't close leaves the house open, so it's worth understanding quickly. The good news: the most common cause is the easiest to check, and it's safe to do so.

  • Safety beams checked first
  • Limits, force and stiff doors
  • Secured before we leave

What's usually behind it

Why a garage door refuses to close.

  1. 01

    Safety beams blocked or misaligned

The photo-eyes near the floor aren’t seeing each other — a bin, a cobweb, sunlight, or one knocked out of line. The door reverses immediately.

  2. 02

    Something in the track

Debris, a stone or a bent section stops the door, and the opener reverses to be safe.

  3. 03

    Door is stiff or unbalanced

Worn rollers, dry hinges or a tired spring mean the door needs more force than the opener allows — so it stops and backs up.

  4. 04

    Limit or force settings

The opener thinks the floor is somewhere it isn’t, or its force setting has drifted. Common on older units.

  5. 05

    Cable slack or off

One side drops faster than the other; the door sits crooked and won’t seat.

  6. 06

Remote held or wall button stuck

A stuck button keeps reversing the door — rare, but worth ruling out.

Before you call

Safe to check before you call.

  1. 01

Clear and clean the safety beams

Find the two small sensors on the tracks near the floor. Move anything in front of them, wipe the lenses, and check both indicator lights are on and steady.

  2. 02

    Look along the tracks

Anything sitting in the track — a stone, a toy, a leaf blower — will stop the door. Bent track: stop and call.

  3. 03

    Try holding the wall button

On many openers, holding the wall button closes the door even if the beams are faulting. If that works, the beams are the problem.

  4. 04

    Watch how the door moves

Shuddering, one side lagging, or a lot of noise on the way down points to a stiff or unbalanced door — not the opener.

Stop and call

Don’t keep forcing a door that reverses

The opener reverses for a reason. Repeatedly overriding it can damage the door, the opener or whatever is in the way. If the beams are clean and it still won’t close, call.

How we fix it

The opener is usually reacting, not failing.

  • Beams

the first thing we check, and the most common fix

  • By hand

door balance tested before blaming the opener

  • Secured

    before we leave, every time

Most doors that won’t close have a healthy opener doing exactly what it should — refusing to close onto an obstruction or a door that has become too stiff. We check the beams and the track, then the door by hand: balance, rollers, hinges, cables. Fix the door and the opener stops complaining.

Then the settings.

Limits and force are re-set so the door seats fully on the floor with the right pressure and reverses correctly on an obstruction. On older units where the settings won’t hold, we’ll tell you whether a repair or a replacement makes sense.

Left secure.

A door that won’t close is a security problem. If a part needs ordering, the door is closed and secured before we leave.

How it works

Straightforward from the first call.

  1. 01

    Tell us what it’s doing

Call or send an enquiry. We'll ask how old the door is, what happened before the fault, and whether anything's been tried.

  2. 02

    We inspect it properly

The whole door system — not just the part that looks broken. Developing wear gets pointed out, not hidden.

  3. 03

    You get the price first

What's wrong, what needs doing now, what can wait. Then the price. No pressure to proceed.

  4. 04

    Fixed, often on the spot

If parts are on the van, the repair is usually done the same visit. If not, we return promptly — generally within a couple of days.

  • Almost always the safety beams — blocked, dirty or out of alignment — or the door meeting more resistance than the opener allows. Clean and check the beams first; if it still reverses, the door itself needs a look.
