Cable repairs · Brisbane northside
Garage door cable snapped, frayed or off the drum.
The lifting cables carry the door on the springs’ tension. When one frays, snaps or jumps its drum, the door lifts unevenly, sits crooked or jams — and it’s under the same load as the spring, so it isn’t a DIY fix.
- Cables replaced in pairs
- Springs and drums checked
- Door re-balanced

What's usually behind it
Why cables fail.
- 01
Wear at the bottom bracket
The cable flexes most where it anchors at the bottom of the door. Strands break, the cable frays, then snaps.
- 02
Corrosion
Cables near the floor pick up moisture. Rust weakens the strands.
- 03
Spring failure
When a spring breaks, the cables go slack and often unwind off the drums.
- 04
Worn drums
A grooved or damaged drum lets the cable slip and jump.
- 05
Door out of alignment
A bent track or a knocked bottom bracket puts the cable off-line, and it walks off the drum.
- 06
Wrong cable
A previous repair with the wrong length or gauge — it never seated properly.
Before you call
Safe to check before you call.
- 01
Look at both sides
Both cables should be taut and wound neatly on the drums at the top. Slack, tangled or dangling cable — stop using the door.
- 02
Check the bottom edge
A door that sits crooked along the floor usually has a cable problem on the low side.
- 03
Look at the spring too
A cable problem often follows a spring problem. A visible gap in the spring means it has broken.

A slack cable is still a loaded cable
The cable system shares the spring’s tension. Pulling, re-seating or cutting a cable can release that load suddenly. Leave the door where it is and call.

Replaced in pairs, seated properly.

Pairs
cables always replaced both sides
Cause
spring, drum or alignment fixed with it
1 visit
for most cable repairs
Cables are replaced as a pair — they’ve done the same work — and wound onto the drums with the door supported and the spring tension safely handled. Then the door is balanced so both sides lift evenly.
The reason gets fixed too.
A cable rarely fails on its own. We check the springs, drums, bottom brackets and track alignment, and fix what caused the cable to fail — otherwise it fails again.
Usually one visit.
Cables and drums for common residential doors are on the van.

How it works
Straightforward from the first call.
- 01
Tell us what it’s doing
Call or send an enquiry. We'll ask how old the door is, what happened before the fault, and whether anything's been tried.
- 02
We inspect it properly
The whole door system — not just the part that looks broken. Developing wear gets pointed out, not hidden.
- 03
You get the price first
What's wrong, what needs doing now, what can wait. Then the price. No pressure to proceed.
- 04
Fixed, often on the spot
If parts are on the van, the repair is usually done the same visit. If not, we return promptly — generally within a couple of days.

0408 190 595No — the cable is under spring tension and re-seating it needs the door supported and the spring handled safely. It’s one of the more dangerous DIY attempts we see. Call.
