Troubleshooting · Brisbane northside

Not broken yet, but not right either.

Slow. Crooked. Shuddering on the way up. Stopping a few centimetres short. A door that’s started behaving differently is a door that’s about to need something — and catching it now is cheaper than the breakdown.

Symptom by symptom

What each odd behaviour usually means.

  1. 01

    Moving slowly

A tired spring making the opener work harder, dry rollers, or an opener with a worn drive. Speed rarely drops for no reason.

  2. 02

    Crooked or uneven

A cable slipping on one side, a spring weaker on one side, or a track out of alignment. Needs attention before it jams.

  3. 03

    Shuddering or jerking

Worn rollers, a bent track section, or a chain-drive opener needing adjustment.

  4. 04

    Stops short of the floor

Limit settings, a stiff bottom seal, or the safety beams catching something.

  5. 05

Opens by itself or reverses randomly

A remote with a stuck button, interference, or an opener fault. Worth ruling out the simple one first.

  6. 06

    Works sometimes

Intermittent faults are usually electrical — a remote, the wall button, a beam sensor, or a failing logic board.

Before you call

Safe to check before you call.

  1. 01

Disengage the opener and try by hand

A door that’s heavy, stiff or uneven by hand is a door problem. A door that’s fine by hand is an opener problem. This one test tells us most of what we need.

  2. 02

Look at the bottom edge when closed

An uneven gap along the floor means the door isn’t level — usually a cable or spring on one side.

  3. 03

    Check the beams and remotes

For reversing, stopping short or opening by itself: clean the safety beams, and take the battery out of any spare remote that might have a stuck button.

Stop and call

Heavy by hand means spring

If the door is hard to lift with the opener disengaged, stop there — that’s a spring problem, and it isn’t safe to keep lifting the door or to run the opener against it.

How we troubleshoot

One system, so we look at all of it.

  • By hand

the first test on every troubleshooting call

  • Most brands

older and newer — independent advice

  • Adjustment

is usually all it takes, caught early

A garage door's springs, cables, rollers, tracks and opener all affect each other. A slow door might be a spring; a spring problem might show up first as an opener fault. We check the door by hand first, then the opener, then the settings — in that order — rather than replacing parts until the symptom goes away.

Gliderol, Merlin, B&D, ATA and the rest.

We work on most common residential systems, older and newer, and know their habits — which units drift on limits, which doors wear rollers, which openers throw a particular fault. We're an independent technician, not a dealer, so the advice isn't tied to a brand.

Fixed while it’s still an adjustment.

Most “not quite right” doors are fixed in a single service visit: adjustment, lubrication, a set of rollers, a re-set opener. Left alone, the same symptoms tend to end in a broken spring or a burnt-out motor.

How it works

Straightforward from the first call.

  1. 01

    Tell us what it’s doing

Call or send an enquiry. We'll ask how old the door is, what happened before the fault, and whether anything's been tried.

  2. 02

    We inspect it properly

The whole door system — not just the part that looks broken. Developing wear gets pointed out, not hidden.

  3. 03

    You get the price first

What's wrong, what needs doing now, what can wait. Then the price. No pressure to proceed.

  4. 04

    Fixed, often on the spot

If parts are on the van, the repair is usually done the same visit. If not, we return promptly — generally within a couple of days.

  • Most often a spring that has lost tension, so the opener is lifting more than it should, or dry and worn rollers. Some openers also slow down deliberately as they age or on a low-power mode. We check the door by hand first — if it’s heavy, it’s the spring.
